![]() The specs for AV1 are still in development, but are being done in conjunction with AMD, nVidia, Intel, Qualcomm, etc. I hope it succeeds, but I don't want to wait for something that may not be any better and won't affect me in terms of licensing, especially if it ends up being a replay of VP8 vs. That's why I'm going with HEVC now (when I can) instead of waiting for AV1. It's not going to be a significant expense for the big companies, and for little guys/consumers, they'll be below the threshold exemption.Ĭonsidering HEVC is the codec for Ultra HD Blu-Ray, and is the direction Apple is going in, as well as having hardware support from Intel and many others (including many also supporting AV1), I don't see HEVC necessarily being short lived. HEVC licensing may seem asinine, but it has reasonable caps and exceptions. Not to mention the impact of x264 and x265. MPEG-LA backed down with H.264 when VP8 became a threat. The test comparisons with HEVC are showing mixed results, not definitively better than HEVC, and that's based on currently released HEVC profiles.Īs far as licensing, we've seen this with VP8 versus H.264. ![]() They're hoping to finalize the spec by the end of the year, which could mean years before we see AV1 being baked into common hardware. I'd be careful about being too optimistic about AV1. If you have a lot of discs and aren't short on space, it'll probably be worth it to wait for AV1 to hit the mainstream. It'll be completely open source with no licensing fees, and Google, Netflix, and Amazon have all said they intend to switch to it as soon as possible. Google, Cisco, Mozilla, and the rest of the Alliance for Open Media will be launching AV1 by the end of the year, which is already better than HEVC. MPEG-LA wants absolutely asinine licensing costs for it, and in addition to that you have to pay into two patent pools. There's also the likely outcome that HEVC will be short lived. I do it because I want to save the space and because the devices I'm watching on primarily are an nvidia Shield, a 4k-capable Roku, and my Pixel C, all of which support it. HEVC encoding also makes heavy use of AVX, which uses a lot of power and heat. Even my Ryzen 1700X takes a while (albeit it's a lot faster than the i7-4790K it replaced). Like I said, HEVC takes a lot longer to transcode. I don't think HEVC is worth it on SD unless you were doing something like ripping the Deep Space 9 set that came out recently, since there's so much video there you can make some savings. It can be better at 480, but it depends on the source and if you want to put in the time and CPU resources on SD video. It's so immersive it is truly unbelievable! Can't wait to get a bluray of Dunkirk down there! Nolan films have some of the best audio engineering. However his seating arrangement isn't optimal yet so we haven't set them up yet. There is room for 2 more that go just above and behind your head so when things fly over you on screen you almost feel like you have to duck. Standard 7.1 with 2.1 more "presence" channels that sort of fill in the blanks between the center and LR channels. My neighbor recently hired me to build him a 170" projector based home theater in his basement with a dolby atmos and dts hd+ enabled receiver and it currently has a 9.2 setup. I liken it to grabbing a #4 at McD's and just throwing the fries away! I mean sure, you don't technically NEED the fries but they're sooo yummy! Plus as a hobbyist audio engineer I kinda feel bad letting all that hard work go to waste. ![]() Movies are mostly all mastered in surround these days and I enjoy it quite a bit. It was just stereo x2 but still totally filled the whole room. I remember when receivers first started doing quad-channel and I was blown away. Just sounds like boring old 80's hi-fi to me.
